Chapter Fifteen

Eliza and Connie climbed into the police carriage as Inspector Adams instructed the driver to take them to the home of Lord Beaufort.

“At least it’s still the Easter recess for the House of Lords, so he should still be in Lowton rather than London,” Eliza said as the carriage moved off.

Inspector Adams coughed to clear his throat. “You do realise that this visit is most irregular? I can’t just take you into the man’s home without getting permission. I have good reason to talk to him, but he has no obligation to let you in.”

“I realise that, but might I suggest that if he refuses it implies he has something to hide?” Eliza eyed the inspector, who sat opposite her. “Perhaps mention that to him.”

“Thank you, Mrs Thomson, I do know how to do my job.”

“I’m sorry, of course you do, but … well, not all police officers do.”

A smile returned to Inspector Adams’ face. “We’re not all rural bobbies with nothing to keep us busy except returning the occasional child to school.”

Connie glared at Inspector Adams. “Not all rural bobbies are bad and you shouldn’t suggest they are. We don’t all want to live in London, you know, and Sergeant Cooper works very hard to keep Moreton safe.”

“There you are, Inspector. A vote of confidence for one of your rural colleagues.” Eliza couldn’t keep the smirk from her face.

“I’m very glad to hear it, I’m sure he does.” The inspector turned his attention to the view from the window as a large detached residence came into view. “It looks like we’re here already. He’s done nicely for himself, hasn’t he?”

Eliza admired the three-storey, box-shaped house which extended out on both sides into the gardens. “I would say so. I knew he lived close to Lowton Hall, but I hadn’t realised how close. You will do your best to get us in, won’t you?”

Inspector Adams walked to the front door with Eliza and Connie close behind. An elderly man in formal dress answered the door.

“Inspector Adams from New Scotland Yard and two acquaintances to see His Lordship.”

“Do you have an appointment, sir?”

“No, but if you could tell His Lordship it is rather urgent, I’d appreciate it.” Inspector Adams gave his best smile.

The butler invited them into the hallway and asked them to wait as he disappeared to find Lord Beaufort.

“Very nice.” Inspector Adams studied the walls decorated with red flock wallpaper that held an array of portraits.

“I don’t suppose I’d complain, but compared to Lowton Hall, it’s not much. Perhaps that’s why he spends so much time there.” Eliza stepped forward to study a painting as the butler reappeared.

“His Lordship will receive you in his office.” The butler spoke to Inspector Adams, but Eliza and Connie wasted no time following him as he was led to a room at the end of a short corridor.

Lord Beaufort stood up from behind an enormous polished desk. “Oh, it’s you.” His smile disappeared when he saw Eliza and Connie.

“Good afternoon, sir.” Eliza
